Lakehead University

Lakehead University teaches at Thunder Bay and Orillia in northern Ontario, and is known for engineering, natural resources management and forestry. Its practical appeal is cost and accessibility. Northern Ontario is materially cheaper to live in than the south, and entry standards are lower than at the U15 institutions where competitive programmes are reported to set cutoffs above 90 per cent. One piece of context is worth having. Full-time undergraduate enrolment here peaked at 6,426 students in 2010, and northern Ontario institutions have faced enrolment decline since, being more exposed than southern ones because of their smaller scale. Laurentian's 2021 insolvency showed what can follow. That is context rather than prediction, but it makes asking about financial position and programme stability a reasonable question. Thunder Bay sits on Lake Superior with severe winters, comparable to northern Kazakhstan.
