The University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon is a U15 research university with particular strength in mining, geology, agriculture and veterinary medicine, which makes it the closest economic match to Kazakhstan of any Canadian university. Saskatchewan is a mining and agricultural province. It produces a substantial share of the world's potash and uranium, and its agriculture is dryland grain farming on prairie soils. Kazakhstan's economy runs on the same two sectors. It is the world's largest uranium producer, a major grain exporter, and its agriculture is dryland farming under a comparable continental climate. The match on both counts is unusually close — the same ores, the same processing questions, the same growing conditions. The university also hosts the Canadian Light Source, the country's only synchrotron, which is a substantial research facility for a student in the physical sciences. Saskatchewan is among the cheapest Canadian provinces for tuition and living costs.
