China University of Petroleum

China University of Petroleum was founded in 1953 as the Beijing Petroleum Institute and is China's leading institution for petroleum engineering, part of Project 211 and the Double First-Class Initiative. Its main campus is in Qingdao, Shandong. For a Kazakh applicant the relevance is direct. Hydrocarbons are the largest part of Kazakhstan's export economy, Chinese state oil companies hold substantial Kazakh assets, and petroleum engineering graduates who read Chinese and understand Chinese industry practice are scarce on both sides of that relationship. One point of confusion is worth resolving before applying. There are two separate universities of this name: this one, formally China University of Petroleum (East China) in Qingdao, and China University of Petroleum (Beijing). They share a history and a name and are administered separately. Qingdao is a coastal Shandong city with living costs below Beijing and Shanghai and a milder climate than the northeastern universities.
