East China Normal University was formed in 1951 as the first national teacher training university of the People's Republic of China, built from the merger of Great China University and Kwang Hua University with faculty drawn from Fudan and Tongji. It is strongest in education, psychology, geography and the humanities. It is also the Chinese partner in New York University Shanghai, a joint-venture university teaching in English and awarding an NYU degree. The two are distinct institutions with different admissions, fees and degrees, and an applicant should be clear which they are applying to. For a Kazakh applicant intending education, psychology or the social sciences, East China Normal is a better subject fit than the engineering-weighted universities, and it sits in Shanghai with the employment and international connections that brings. It is distinct from Shanghai Normal University, a separate institution in the same city with a similar name.
