Northwestern Polytechnical University

Northwestern Polytechnical University in Xi'an is China's leading institution for aeronautics, astronautics and marine technology. Its aerospace engineering was ranked second in the world in the Academic Ranking of World Universities for 2020, with metallurgical engineering third, and mechanical and marine engineering in the low thirties. Those are exceptional subject positions, well above the university's overall standing, and for an applicant in aerospace they are the argument for it. The counterpart needs stating plainly. Northwestern Polytechnical is one of the Seven Sons of National Defence, a group of Chinese universities under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology with substantial defence research. Access to some laboratories and research areas may be restricted to Chinese nationals, and several institutions in that group appear on United States export control lists, which can complicate later visa applications or employment screening in defence-adjacent sectors. An applicant should ask which parts of the intended programme are open to them, and weigh the longer term rather than only the four years.
