Ocean University of China in Qingdao is China's leading institution for marine science, oceanography, fisheries and marine engineering. It is a Project 985 institution and the only one in China built around the marine sciences. For a Kazakh applicant that specialism raises an obvious question, since Kazakhstan is landlocked. The honest answer is that much of the university's provision would not apply directly at home. But two parts of it might. The Caspian Sea is a substantial fisheries and hydrocarbon basin bordering Kazakhstan, with real challenges in fisheries management, water quality and offshore engineering. And the university's aquaculture, water resources and environmental science provision transfers to inland water management, which matters for the Aral basin, Lake Balkhash and Kazakhstan's river systems. An applicant should establish whether the intended programme is genuinely transferable or specific to open-ocean conditions before committing four years to it.
