Tongji University

Tongji University was founded in Shanghai on 1 October 1907 as a German medical school, and the German connection remains its defining institutional feature. It resumed formal ties with Germany in 1978 and describes itself as a window for Chinese-German exchange in culture, science and technology. For a Kazakh applicant that history has a practical consequence worth investigating. Tongji runs Chinese-German joint programmes and exchange arrangements that few other Chinese universities offer, so a student who may eventually want to work or study in Germany has routes here that are unavailable elsewhere in China. Its College of Architecture and Urban Planning is reported as first in Asia, and its civil, environmental and transport engineering are among the strongest in China. Two entry conditions are unusually specific: HSK 5 with a score of at least 180, and an age range of 18 to 25 for undergraduate applicants.
