Xidian University

Xidian University traces its origins to 1931, when it was founded as a communications school of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army, and it remains among China's leading institutions for electronics, computer science and information engineering. Its computer science, electronic science and information and communication engineering are rated A-plus by Essential Science Indicators. That subject strength is real, and it sits in exactly the fields a Kazakh applicant in computing or electronics would want. It is also one of the Seven Sons of National Defence, with substantial defence-related research under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Access to certain laboratories and research areas may be restricted to Chinese nationals, and institutions in that group appear on United States export control lists. Where an applicant's interest is commercial software or civilian electronics, those restrictions may not bite at all. Where it is signals, radar, satellite communications or cryptography, they very likely will.
