Aberystwyth University

Aberystwyth is a research university on the west coast of Wales, and its case rests on two things a league table will not show. The first is depth in a narrow field. Its Department of International Politics, founded in 1919, was the first in the world, and the subject remains a genuine strength. For a student intending international relations — or geography, agriculture or the biological sciences — Aberystwyth offers more than its size suggests. The second is total cost. A three-year Welsh degree, fees likely at the lower end of the British range, and west Wales living costs among the cheapest in the country. Against a four-year Scottish degree in Edinburgh the difference across the course could exceed GBP 40,000 — larger than any scholarship a British university is likely to offer. Against both, weigh isolation honestly. Aberystwyth is roughly five hours from London by rail with no nearby airport, so every journey home routes through a distant city and costs a day each way. For an eighteen-year-old moving countries alone that matters more than a line in a fee table.
