Birmingham City University is a large modern university in England's second city, teaching art and design through the Birmingham School of Art, music through the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, and media, business, computing and the health professions. It guarantees GBP 5,000 to eligible international undergraduates — GBP 3,000 in year one and GBP 2,000 in year two — awarded automatically, with no application. A guaranteed award is worth more for planning than a competitive one, because a family can budget on it rather than hope for it. The exclusions matter as much as the figure, and one cuts against the university's own strengths: Royal Birmingham Conservatoire courses are not eligible, nor are foundation years, sub-degree, part-time or apprenticeship routes, nor students progressing from a Birmingham City University foundation programme. A musician drawn here by the Conservatoire is drawn to the one part of the university the scholarship does not reach. Birmingham is a large city with an international airport, living costs well below London, and three other universities that admit separately.
