The Glasgow School of Art

The Glasgow School of Art was founded in 1845 and is among the oldest and most respected art schools in Britain, teaching architecture, fine art and design. It is a specialist institution rather than a university with an art department, and the whole school is organised around studio practice. It fixes its fee. GBP 24,800 a year is charged 'for each year of study' and the school states the figure 'is fixed for the duration of the programme'. Only a handful of UK institutions do that, and it makes the cost of the whole degree knowable at the point of accepting an offer. Being in Scotland, its undergraduate degrees run four years rather than three. At GBP 24,800 fixed, four years is GBP 99,200 in tuition — so the protection applies to a longer course, which cuts both ways. A deposit of GBP 6,400 is required and deducted from the balance at enrolment, after which fees are payable in three equal instalments a year.
