Northumbria is a large modern university in Newcastle upon Tyne, known for design, business, law, computing and the health professions. It publishes one figure that deserves to be read by every applicant to every British university, not only this one: it puts the real cost of a year in Newcastle at around GBP 16,686, against a visa maintenance floor of GBP 10,539. That is a gap of more than GBP 6,000 a year in one of the more affordable English cities. The maintenance figure is what the Home Office wants evidenced; it is not what a student will spend. Northumbria also teaches in London, which raises the maintenance requirement by GBP 3,222 a year — establish the campus before assembling documents. It is a separate institution from Newcastle University, and in this city that difference carries a specific value: Newcastle University offers GBP 7,000 a year, renewable on progression, for the length of the course, automatically, with Kazakhstan named on its eligible list. Over three years that is GBP 21,000, and it is the benchmark any Northumbria offer should be measured against.
