Hong Kong Shue Yan University was founded in 1971 as Shue Yan College and became Hong Kong's first private university in 2006. It is best known for journalism and social work. Two verifications should precede any application, and the first is one no other Hong Kong institution requires. Shue Yan teaches in both English and Chinese depending on the department, unlike the publicly-funded universities where English predominates throughout. A Kazakh applicant without Chinese would find a Chinese-medium programme unmanageable, and which language a programme uses is not always obvious from a prospectus. It should be confirmed in writing. For journalism that question decides more than comprehension. A Chinese-medium journalism degree prepares a graduate for Chinese-language media; an English-medium one prepares them for international media. Those are different careers, not different versions of the same one. The second is funding. As a self-financing private institution it sits outside the Belt and Road Scholarship, for which Kazakhstan is one of only six designated countries. For social work specifically, professional registration in the intended country of practice is a third question to settle.
