MSU is Michigan's public land-grant research university at East Lansing. Its defining feature for a Kazakh applicant is a published provisional-admission route with a low entry bar and a hard exit condition: applicants scoring as little as TOEFL 60 or IELTS 6.0 may be admitted provisionally, but must take ESL courses, face restrictions on how many degree courses they may take, and must reach full proficiency within three consecutive semesters or lose their place. MSU defines an international student simply as 'a person holding a nonimmigrant visa' and encourages applicants to 'begin the application process one year prior to the anticipated semester of enrollment'. Named awards open to international students include the MSU Non-Resident Scholarship, a #YouAreWelcomeHere Scholarship and the Honors College Excellence Scholarship.
