Whitman College

Whitman is a liberal arts college in Walla Walla, Washington, with roughly 1,500 students and an endowment above USD 847 million. It makes an unusually strong need commitment and states it twice on its own pages: 'Whitman College meets 100% of demonstrated need for international students from outside the U.S.', with no loan expectation. Need is assessed through the Whitman International Student Financial Aid Application, which carries no fee and works differently from most forms: it asks the family to state directly, in US dollars, what they can contribute, and Whitman subtracts that from the total cost of attendance. Because that cost includes tuition, food, housing, books, incidentals and health insurance, a funded student's costs are genuinely covered. The counterweight is stated with equal directness: 'Whitman is highly need-aware for international students.'
