Northwestern University in Qatar opened in 2008 in Doha's Education City and teaches journalism, communication and liberal arts, awarding Northwestern degrees. Its parent institution's Medill School of Journalism is among the most respected in the world, and the Qatar campus teaches within that tradition. Doha's position matters here specifically. The city hosts Al Jazeera and a substantial regional media industry, so a journalism student studies inside a working media centre rather than at a distance from one. For coverage of Central Asia, the Gulf and the wider region, that is a practical advantage. It is also the most attainable of the American campuses abroad that publish an admission rate: typically one in six applicants is admitted, roughly 17%, against 9% at Georgetown in Qatar. The early round is Early Action rather than binding Early Decision, so an offer can be held while aid is compared.
