RIT Kosovo was founded in 2002 as the American University in Kosovo and offers degrees from Rochester Institute of Technology, accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. It is separately licensed by Kosovo's Ministry of Education and accredited by the Kosovo Accreditation Agency. Its tuition is set substantially below Rochester Institute of Technology's home campus in New York, and the published fee covers lecture and exam fees, library access and a personal laptop. The institution is candid about its limits, which is unusual and worth respecting. It is not a research university, its mission is undergraduate and professional master's instruction, and it is small with just over 900 alumni. One point is specific to Kosovo and should be settled early. Its international recognition is not universal and Kazakhstan is among the states that have not recognised it. That does not affect the American degree, but it may affect the practical business of a student permit and document recognition, and it should be established directly rather than assumed either way.
