Laurentian University

Laurentian University in Sudbury is a bilingual institution with genuine strength in mining engineering and geology, situated in the largest hardrock mining centre in Canada. For a Kazakh applicant in the extractive sector that combination is directly relevant. It also has a recent institutional history that should be understood before applying, because it is unusual and because agent material is unlikely to mention it. In February 2021 Laurentian became the first public university in Canada declared insolvent under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act, federal corporate bankruptcy legislation. It cut 69 to 76 academic programmes in April 2021 and reduced its workforce by close to a quarter. It exited creditor protection in November 2022 after an Ontario government bailout. In March 2026 it suspended intake to four programmes after the provincial quality council found process failures. Mining engineering is not among them. The four are criminal justice, criminology, interdisciplinary studies, and equity, diversity and human rights.
