Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications was founded in 1955 and is China's leading institution for telecommunications and information technology. It is co-funded by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and sits within Project 211 and the Double First-Class Initiative. Its specialism is narrow and deep. Where a general university teaches computing as one department among many, this institution is organised around telecommunications, networks, information security and electronic engineering. For a Kazakh applicant that focus has practical relevance. Chinese telecommunications equipment and infrastructure are widely deployed across Central Asia, and a degree from the institution most closely tied to the Chinese telecommunications ministry connects to employers operating in Kazakhstan. It has around 27,000 students, of whom roughly 15,000 are undergraduates.
