China University of Political Science and Law

China University of Political Science and Law was founded in 1952 and is the country's leading institution for legal education. Its graduates are heavily represented in the Chinese judiciary, the procuratorate, government legal offices and the major commercial law firms. For a Kazakh applicant it raises a question worth answering honestly before applying. Legal systems are national. A Chinese law degree qualifies a graduate to understand and work within Chinese law, and it does not lead to legal practice in Kazakhstan. That does not make it useless. Chinese commercial law is directly relevant to trade, investment and contracts between Kazakhstan and China, and a Kazakh national who understands Chinese law and speaks the language is genuinely scarce. But the career it leads to is in commerce, trade or corporate advisory work rather than in Kazakh legal practice. The language demand is the highest of any subject. Law is entirely language, and HSK 5 is a realistic minimum.
