The Communication University of China in Beijing was founded in 1954 to train broadcasting personnel and is now the country's leading institution for media, journalism, broadcasting and communication. It is part of Project 211 and the Double First-Class Initiative. Its graduates dominate Chinese broadcasting, and it retains close institutional ties to the state media system. For a student intending journalism or media production in China, that placement is the argument. For a Kazakh applicant two things should be weighed. Media and journalism are language disciplines, and producing broadcast content in Chinese is a substantially harder task than understanding lectures in it. And a Chinese media degree trains for the Chinese media environment, whose structures and regulatory context differ from those a graduate would work in at home. Where it does transfer is in media technology, animation, digital production and the technical side of broadcasting, which are far less context-dependent than journalism.
