East China University of Science and Technology was founded in 1952 as the East China Institute of Chemical Technology and remains among China's strongest institutions for chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science and biotechnology. It is part of Project 211 and the Double First-Class Initiative. Its field connects directly to Kazakhstan's economy. Petrochemicals, mining and processing are substantial national employers, and Chinese investment in Kazakh energy and processing is significant. Chemical and materials engineers trained in China, with the language, are relevant to firms already operating at home. The university sits a tier below the national research universities in Shanghai, which makes entry more reachable while Shanghai living costs apply in full. Around 5% of its students are international, a moderate proportion by Chinese standards and well below Donghua in the same city. It should not be confused with the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei, a C9 institution with a similar name and a different standing.
