Jiangnan University in Wuxi is China's leading institution for food science and technology, ranked first nationally in that field, alongside strength in light industry, biotechnology, design and textiles. It is part of Project 211 and the Double First-Class Initiative. Food science is the reason a Kazakh applicant should look at it. Kazakhstan produces grain, meat and dairy at scale but processes comparatively little of it domestically, and building processing capacity is a stated national priority. Chinese food technology, equipment and processing investment are increasingly present in Central Asia. A graduate in food science, food engineering or fermentation technology from China's leading institution in the field has direct application at home rather than only abroad. The alternative is studying the subject at a general university where it is one department among many. Wuxi is a mid-sized Jiangsu city between Shanghai and Nanjing, below both on living costs and within an hour of each by rail.
