Shanghai Jiao Tong University

Shanghai Jiao Tong University was founded in 1896 and is a member of the C9 League, strongest in engineering, artificial intelligence, robotics, biomedical engineering and medicine. Around 11% of its students are international. It publishes something few Chinese universities do: a structured pre-university programme with fees attached. The programme is designed for international students who need academic and language preparation before degree entry, and Shanghai Jiao Tong states that pre-university students receive priority for its own undergraduate programmes on passing an assessment. The fees are substantial. The medicine-track programme is reported at CNY 57,800 and the science, engineering and agriculture track at CNY 72,800, both well above a year of degree tuition. An applicant should weigh that against a Chinese Government Scholarship preparatory year, which is funded. Its School of Medicine runs an English-medium MBBS reported at CNY 40,000 a year.
