Xi'an Jiaotong University shares its origin with Shanghai Jiao Tong, both descending from Nanyang Public School founded in 1896. It moved west to Xi'an in 1956 and is a member of the C9 League, strongest in engineering, energy, management and medicine. Xi'an is the practical argument. It is a major inland city with living costs well below Beijing, Shanghai or Shenzhen, and it sits at the eastern end of the historic Silk Road with established connections westward through Central Asia. For a Kazakh applicant that geography is not decorative. Xi'an is a focus of Belt and Road institutional links, and the university runs the University Alliance of the Silk Road, which gives it more sustained engagement with Central Asian institutions than the coastal C9 universities have. Xi'an Jiaotong University should not be confused with Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in Suzhou, which is a separate Sino-British joint venture teaching in English.
