Public specialist music conservatoire
£30 700 (2026/27)
The Royal Northern College of Music is a specialist conservatoire in Manchester, teaching instrumental and vocal performance, composition, conducting, jazz and popular music. Its BMus fee is GBP 30,700 a year, which corrects an assumption worth naming: studying at a conservatoire outside London does not make the tuition cheaper. This is GBP 7,580 a year more than Guildhall in the Barbican and only GBP 600 less than the Royal College of Music. What Manchester does save is living costs. The Home Office maintenance requirement is GBP 10,539 over nine months rather than GBP 13,761, and real rents sit well below central London. Across a four-year degree that is a genuine saving — but it belongs in the living-cost column, not the fee column. Manchester also has an international airport with better connections to Central Asia than most UK cities outside London, and a substantial classical music infrastructure including the Hallé and the BBC Philharmonic.
