SOAS University of London

SOAS is a research university in Bloomsbury specialising in the languages, cultures, politics, economics and law of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. For a Kazakh applicant it is a specific proposition rather than a general one. SOAS is among the few British universities with sustained academic attention to Central Asia, and a student aiming at regional studies, languages, development or Middle Eastern and Asian politics will find depth here that larger and higher-ranked universities do not offer. A student wanting engineering, medicine or the physical sciences will not find the subject at all — SOAS does not teach them. On money it publishes the mildest escalation of any British university that does not fix its fee outright: overseas rates 'are subject to increases of up to 5% in subsequent years of study on the same degree programme'. Every University of London institution awards its own degrees and admits independently. King's, UCL, LSE, Queen Mary, Royal Holloway, SOAS, Goldsmiths, Birkbeck, City St George's and Brunel are all members of the federation, and naming two of them on a UCAS form uses two of the five choices.
