The Hong Kong Polytechnic University traces its origins to 1937 and became a university in 1994. It is strongest in design, hotel and tourism management, engineering and applied sciences. Non-local tuition for government-funded Bachelor's programmes is 200,000 Hong Kong dollars a year for 2026/27, and the university publishes an average total spending figure of around 287,655 a year for non-local students — one of the few institutions of any destination available to them to publish a genuine all-in number rather than leaving a family to assemble one. Two payment details matter and both catch people out. An initial fee of 20,000 secures a place and the university states it is required of all offer recipients regardless of whether they hold a scholarship, so a student on a full Belt and Road Scholarship still pays it. And telegraphic transfer from overseas adds 240 for the beneficiary bank service fee, which is why card or e-wallet payment is advised. From the second year onwards non-local students must arrange their own accommodation outside the Student Halls. That is a shorter guarantee than City University's two years or the Chinese University's normative period minus two, and it means three of four years at private Hong Kong rents.
