American University sits in Washington DC, and its defining feature for a Kazakh applicant is the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship, which covers all billable AU expenses — full tuition, room and board — for a small number of international students needing an F-1 or J-1 visa, renewable across four years. Few awards reach beyond tuition to cover housing and food, and AU has recently added partial versions alongside it. Against that, AU sets an unusually high proof-of-funds requirement. Every international applicant needing a student visa must confirm a minimum of USD 87,374 on the AU Declaration of Finances Form, signed within the past three months, even if they hope to receive a partial merit scholarship.
