GVSU is a public university in Allendale, Michigan, with 130 undergraduate majors and students from more than 80 countries, supported by the Padnos International Center. Every admitted international undergraduate automatically pays the Michigan resident rate, with no condition attached. GVSU states it plainly: 'All international undergraduate students on select visa types (E2, F1, H4, K2, L2, R2, TN, and TD) who have been admitted to Grand Valley will receive a scholarship to cover the extra cost of being a non-Michigan resident. With this scholarship, you will pay the Michigan tuition rate.' That is unusual. Many universities offer some route to resident or reduced rates, but almost all attach conditions — Georgia State and Florida State require a competitive merit award, the Texas institutions require a qualifying scholarship of USD 1,000 or USD 4,000, Wichita State requires a 3.0 grade average and charges 150% of the resident rate rather than the resident rate itself, and Oakland restricts its equivalent to citizens of Canada and Mexico. GVSU attaches none of these. F-1 is explicitly on the list, the award renews automatically for up to four years, and a separate USD 2,500 International Merit Scholarship sits on top of it.
