Public research university
$29 820 (2026/27)
UAB is a public research university in Birmingham, described as the only public four-year degree-granting university in Alabama's largest metropolitan area and the state's largest research institution and single largest employer. It enrols students from 140 countries across roughly 100 undergraduate and 90-plus graduate programmes, with recognised strength in medicine, health sciences, computer science, business and engineering. Its reported acceptance rate is around 87%, which is very open. On funding, one enrolled international student describes the mechanism usefully: an award received automatically on the strength of test scores that brought costs 'down to in-state tuition levels', with 'a single application to fill out that enrols you for consideration to all scholarships available'. That is anecdotal rather than policy, but it is consistent with the automatic, test-banded structure the Tuscaloosa and Huntsville campuses operate. UAB admits in three intakes and uses rolling admissions with priority deadlines for scholarships and housing.
