WMU is a public research university in Kalamazoo enrolling around 17,600 students including more than 1,200 international students from over 95 countries, across seven degree-granting colleges and 250-plus programmes. Its named international award is clear and automatic: the Global Education Merit Scholarship, 'valued up to USD 10,000 per academic year', applicable to WMU tuition 'throughout the duration of your program', with 'no additional scholarship application' necessary and a minimum 3.50 grade average required. Two restrictions matter enormously for a Bolashak scholar: WMU states merit scholarships 'are available only for degree-seeking students on F-1 or J-1 status' and that 'they cannot be combined with governmental or non-governmental organization (NGO) scholarships or full WMU assistantships.'
