Toronto Metropolitan University

Toronto Metropolitan University was founded in 1948 as the Ryerson Institute of Technology to train tradespeople and technicians after the Second World War, and was renamed in 2022. That renaming matters practically rather than as trivia: older guidance, agent lists and ranking tables still use Ryerson, and both names refer to the same institution. An applicant researching it should search under both. Its orientation remains applied rather than theoretical, with substantial industry partnerships across Toronto. Business, engineering, media and design are its principal strengths. The downtown campus sits in central Toronto rather than on a separate site, which for internships and part-time work is a genuine advantage over a suburban campus. It also means no traditional enclosed campus and no large residence community, which some students prefer and others do not. Toronto living costs are among the highest in Canada and apply regardless of which institution a student attends.
