Trinity Western University in Langley, British Columbia was founded in 1962 and is the largest private Christian university in Canada. Two things distinguish it from every other Canadian institution here and both should be settled before applying rather than after arriving. It asks students to sign a community covenant governing conduct and behaviour, extending beyond academic matters into personal life. The covenant was the subject of a Supreme Court of Canada decision in 2018 concerning the university's proposed law school, which establishes that it is substantive rather than nominal. It should be read in full and the decision made knowingly. And it is a private institution. Most private career colleges are ineligible for work permit purposes; private degree-granting universities are treated differently, but the position for the intended programme should be verified against IRCC's designated learning institution list before any deposit is paid.
