The University of Calgary is a U15 research university in Alberta's energy capital, with particular strength in petroleum engineering, chemical engineering, geoscience and energy economics. Calgary is the headquarters city of the Canadian oil and gas industry. For a Kazakh applicant that concentration matters more than the ranking: internships, placements and graduate recruitment in the sector are physically present around the university rather than at a distance from it. Kazakhstan's economy is weighted to hydrocarbons and extractives, so a petroleum or chemical engineer trained here works on comparable geology and comparable operating conditions to those at home. Alberta has lower tuition and living costs than Ontario or British Columbia and no provincial sales tax. The University of Alberta in Edmonton is the natural comparison and the two are worth approaching together.
