The University of Windsor sits directly across the river from Detroit, in the centre of the Canadian automotive industry, and its engineering provision reflects that. For a Kazakh applicant the automotive and mechanical engineering focus is worth weighing against the general options. Kazakhstan has a growing vehicle assembly sector and a substantial machinery and equipment import market, and mechanical engineering transfers broadly regardless. The border position is the distinguishing practical feature, and one common assumption about it is wrong. Crossing to the United States requires American entry permission that a Canadian study permit does not confer. A Kazakh national would need a separate United States visa, which should not be assumed available. The industrial exposure is on the Canadian side. Windsor is materially cheaper to live in than Toronto and sits four hours from it.
