Beijing Institute of Technology was founded in May 1939 as the Yan'an Institute of Natural Sciences and is among China's leading science and engineering universities. In 2010 it co-founded the Excellence League with nine other Chinese universities. It operates six campuses: four in Beijing and two further sites in Hebei and Guangdong. Which campus a programme runs at should be established early, since the Guangdong site in particular sits in a different province with different living costs and a different graduate employment market. The university is strongest in mechanical engineering, optoelectronics, automation, materials and information technology, with a defence and armaments research heritage. That heritage is worth noting. Whether specific research areas or laboratories are restricted to Chinese nationals should be established, since it is a field where such restrictions commonly apply.
