Beijing Jiaotong University was founded in 1896 and is China's foremost institution for railway and transport engineering, alongside strong provision in electronics, computing, economics and management. It teaches across two campuses. Its specialism is directly relevant to Kazakhstan. China's rail network and the Belt and Road freight corridors run through Central Asia, and the Kazakh rail sector is a substantial employer. A degree in rail transport engineering, logistics or transport planning from the leading Chinese institution in that field has clear application at home rather than only in China. That is a stronger subject-fit argument than most Chinese universities offer a Kazakh applicant, and it is worth weighing against a higher-ranked but less relevant institution. Beijing Jiaotong is distinct from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Xi'an Jiaotong University, which share the word jiaotong, meaning transport or communications, but are separate institutions.
