Chongqing University

Chongqing University was founded in 1929 and is a Project 985 institution, strongest in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials science and architecture. It was established as the major national polytechnic institution for the southwest, in the same planning tradition that produced Harbin Institute of Technology in the northeast. Chongqing is a directly administered municipality rather than part of Sichuan province, which applicants frequently assume from the geography. That has a practical consequence: municipalities run their own scholarship schemes, and Chongqing's funding is separate from both Sichuan's and the national scheme. Its engineering fields connect to Kazakh sectors that employ substantially — construction, power generation and heavy manufacturing. Living costs sit well below Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, and across four years that difference generally exceeds the tuition gap between two comparable universities.
