Nanchang University was founded in 1921 and is the leading university in Jiangxi province, part of Project 211 and the Double First-Class Initiative. It is large, with around 50,193 students on 2018/19 figures, of whom roughly 35,213 are undergraduates. Its position is worth understanding precisely. It is a provincial university rather than a national one, which places it below the Project 985 institutions in standing while remaining the strongest university in its province. For an applicant whose grades or Chinese fall short of a 985 institution, that is a realistic alternative rather than a large step down. Around 1,400 of its students are international, under 3% of the total. That is a small proportion for a university of this size, and it shapes the practical experience of arriving alone more than any ranking does. Jiangxi is among the more affordable Chinese provinces and Nanchang living costs sit well below the coastal cities.
