Ningbo University was founded in 1986 with a donation from the Hong Kong shipping magnate Sir Yue-Kong Pao, and is part of the Double First-Class Initiative. It teaches across the sciences, engineering, marine science, medicine, business and the humanities. It is a young institution by Chinese standards and sits outside Project 985 and Project 211, so entry requirements are more reachable than at Zhejiang University in the same province, a C9 member. Ningbo is a substantial port city with living costs below Hangzhou and well below Shanghai, while sitting within reach of both by rail. For a student who wants coastal Zhejiang without Hangzhou or Shanghai prices, that is a genuine position. One naming point matters here more than most. Ningbo University is not the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, a Sino-British joint venture in the same city that teaches in English and charges several times as much. Both appear in searches for universities in Ningbo.
