Southeast University traces its origins to 1902 and took its present name in 1988. It is a Project 985 and Project 211 institution with 34 schools and 84 undergraduate disciplines, and holds a national lead in architecture, civil engineering, electronics, information technology, energy and power engineering, and transport technology. The architecture provision is the standout. Southeast is among the small group of Chinese universities regarded as foundational in architectural education, and its civil engineering is equally strong. It shares a common ancestry with Nanjing University, both descending from Sanjiang Normal College and National Central University before the 1952 reorganisation split them. They are now entirely separate institutions in the same city. It teaches across three campuses in Nanjing: the historical Sipailou campus, the medical Dingjiaqiao campus and the main suburban Jiulonghu campus.
