Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in Chengdu traces its origins to 1925 and is among China's leading specialist finance institutions, part of Project 211 and the Double First-Class Initiative. It is described as having an entrepreneurial character. It is the third of the major Chinese finance universities alongside the Central University of Finance and Economics in Beijing and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. The three differ mainly by location and by which regional financial system their graduates enter. For a Kazakh applicant Chengdu is the practical argument. Living costs run CNY 22,000 to CNY 40,000 a year against CNY 30,000 to CNY 55,000 in Beijing and Shanghai, and across a four-year degree that difference is substantial. Chengdu also sits on the overland Belt and Road corridors with direct international air connections, which affects the practical difficulty of travelling home.
