Tianjin University was founded in 1895 as the Imperial Tientsin University and is the oldest modern university in China. It is a Project 985 institution strongest in chemical engineering, civil engineering, architecture, mechanical engineering and precision instruments. It operates articulation agreements with foreign universities, including a route where students completing two or three years of an engineering degree at Tianjin transfer into year three or four at the University of Glasgow. Arrangements of that kind are worth investigating for an applicant who wants a Chinese degree with a European finish, though the fee and visa position changes on transfer. Tianjin sits half an hour from Beijing by high-speed rail at materially lower living costs, which for a four-year degree is a substantial saving with the capital still reachable. The university is immediately adjacent to Nankai and the two share research facilities, but they admit separately.
