Zhongnan University of Economics and Law was founded in 1948 as Zhongyuan University and took its present form through the merger of finance and law institutes drawing faculty from Wuhan University and Sun Yat-sen University. It is part of Project 211 and the Double First-Class Initiative with more than 30,000 students. Its combination of economics, finance and law in one institution is unusual and reflects the Chinese practice of pairing those disciplines. For a student interested in commercial law, financial regulation or economic policy, that pairing is the argument. One caution applies as it does at any Chinese law school. A Chinese law degree does not qualify a graduate to practise law in Kazakhstan, because legal systems are national. What it does lead to is commercial and trade advisory work, where understanding Chinese law and reading Chinese is genuinely scarce. Wuhan living costs are among the most affordable of any major Chinese university city.
