Falmouth University is a specialist creative institution in Cornwall, teaching art, design, film, photography, games, music, writing and the performing arts. It is not a general university and does not teach law, medicine or the physical sciences. Subject fit therefore decides whether Falmouth is worth an application at all. For a student intending games development, film production, illustration or photography it offers concentration and studio culture that a larger university cannot. For anyone else it is simply the wrong institution, however good. Falmouth requires 50% of the first year's fees before enrolment, and states that international fees may increase in the second or later years of a course without publishing a ceiling on that increase. Half a year's fee before term sits alongside, not instead of, the GBP 10,539 held for 28 days for the visa. Cornwall is the far south-west of England and among the most remote university locations in the country. Living costs are low, but every journey home is long and the part-time labour market is thin.
