Newcastle University is a public research university in the north-east of England. Its funding position for a Kazakh applicant is unusually strong, and the reason is specific rather than general. Newcastle's Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship is worth 'GBP 7,000 per academic year towards tuition fees', Kazakhstan is named on its list of eligible countries, and no separate application is needed: 'eligible candidates will automatically be awarded a Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship as part of their academic course application'. An automatic award of that size, repeating each year, changes the arithmetic of a three-year degree more than most merit discounts do.
