Birmingham Newman University

Birmingham Newman University is a small public university at Bartley Green in Birmingham. It took its current name from Newman University, and both refer to the same institution. It teaches teaching education and teacher training, health and social care, business, psychology, criminology and the humanities. One question comes before every other one here, and it is administrative rather than academic: whether Newman holds a Student sponsor licence and can issue a Certificate of Acceptance for Studies. No Student visa can be granted without a CAS, and no university can issue one without a licence. At a university with a very small international intake this is worth confirming in writing before an application is prepared, rather than assumed because other universities have one. Education and teacher training are Newman's historic strength. For an international student the decisive question there is whether professional registration and employment in UK schools is open to a non-UK national after graduation — a teaching qualification that does not lead to registration is worth far less than it appears.
