University College London is a public research university in central London. Two of its published positions matter more to a Kazakh family than any ranking. The first is a fee guarantee. UCL states that 'most International undergraduate students benefit from a cohort guarantee, meaning that their tuition fees will not increase during the course of the programme'. That is unusual in Britain, where the normal arrangement is an annual rise for the length of the degree, and it makes a three-year total predictable at the point of accepting an offer. The second is the exception to it. UCL states that 'the MBBS Medicine and Intercalated Medicine years are excluded from the cohort guarantee', with increases there capped by reference to inflation. A student applying for medicine is on the ordinary rising-fee footing, not the guaranteed one.
