The University of Manchester is a public research university in the north-west of England. It keeps a page written for applicants from Kazakhstan, noting that students from Kazakhstan 'regularly express interest in our science and engineering foundation programmes, as well as bachelor's, master's and research degrees'. Manchester is among the clearest institutions in Britain about what a Kazakh school leaver actually holds. It states that an applicant with a High School Diploma is 'required to complete a University-recognised foundation programme before joining an undergraduate course', and separately accepts the Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools Grade 12 Certificate for direct entry. Those two sentences decide the route years before the application is written. A student holding the NIS certificate applies to the first year; a student holding the attestat alone applies to a foundation year first, and pays for the extra year.
